Basketball
To encourage fairness among players with different disabilities, each player is classified according to his or her disability, on a point system that goes from 1 to 4.5 in half-point increments (i.e. The higher the classification, the less extreme the disability). A technical foul is assessed if a team has five players on the court that exceed a total point value of 14.0 points. From regional, national, international, and Olympic competition, wheelchair basketball is played all over the world and enjoys continued growth and popularity.
Wheelchair basketball is one of the few sports that can be enjoyed with a standard every day wheelchair. This sport, like any other sport, offers many custom wheelchairs for those who want to improve their game play or are into competitive basketball. For the recreational basketball player, an everyday chair with the addition of spoke guards will provide an ample chair for a friendly game of basketball. Gravity defying wheel camber, ultra light weight, front end wraparound protective bar, tri-wheeled, extremely high and very low seating are the beginning for the basketball specific competition wheelchair.
With a few modifications, wheelchair basketball abides by the same rules as standard basketball, including court size, basket height and three-second lane violations in the key area. A player is allowed two pushes of the wheelchair and then must dribble the basketball at least once.More than two pushes is considered a traveling violation. A technical foul results if a player puts his or her feet on the floor or rises out of the chair to gain an unfair physical advantage.
