Bowling
Despite having disabilities, every bowler is competitive and wants to perform at his or her best. At the end of the season, monetary awards are handed out to all the bowlers, with those who have raised their average the most from the last season (those who improved the most) receiving the higher money prizes, while others receive less. Each week, the bowlers pay $2, which goes into a fund that is used for prize money and a small banquet at the end of a season. Each season lasts for about 20 weeks, with a month's break in between seasons.
Some bowlers participate in jackpots, which is exactly what other bowling leagues do, where bowlers put money into a pot each week, and the person who bowls the best, wins the pot.
Not everyone participates in this aspect of bowling, but many do.

Fort Shafter Wheelchair Bowling League
Every Saturday about twenty persons with disabilities converge on the bowling alley at Fort Shafter in Hawaii. Many of the participants have cerebral palsy, while others are dealing with the after-effects of a stroke. Although there are a few bowlers who have disabilities that allow them to be ambulatory, 90% of the bowlers are wheelchair bound.
Thus, the majority of the league bowls through a non-traditional means. They utilize a metal ramp structure. The ramps are angled at approximately 60 degrees, and have a solid base. This allows someone who might not have the physical strength to actually roll the ball on his or her own the opportunity to still bowl, and enjoy the sport. The ramp user still has to aim in order to be successful in the sport.
Since it takes time for the bowler to get situated at the ramp, the league is arranged so that time is used as efficiently as possible. Each bowler bowls 5 frames of a game and then the bowler is brought back to rest, while the next bowler is brought up to the lane.
The league is held every Saturday from 10:30am to 1:00pm. If you have a group of at least 12 or more and are interested in volunteering or bowling, e-mail Brian Kajiyama (that's me above!) at [email protected] and I will put you in contact with Mr. Victor.
