Track and Field
Male and female wheelchair athletes can participate in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m and 10000m track events as well as the marathon. Racers wear specially designed racing gloves, which allows for maximum grip.
Their wheelchairs consist of 3 wheels and a special compensator device which is used to set the front of the wheels to the curvature of the track so that steering around the bends is not needed.
Track and field is one of the more popular wheelchair sports due to the fact that these events are often included in able-bodied competitions. Field events include the discus, shot put, and javelin.
Quadriplegics, who are unable to grasp a javelin, throw a club shaped like a small bowling pin. All athletes may throw out of a regular wheelchair or out of a custom made throwing chair, which has no wheels. Raising off of the chair is a disqualifying position so athletes must remain in a stationary position in their wheelchairs.
This is Wali, who has polio, throwing the shot put. Wali is the national junior champion for discuss and the benchpress, held in California this year. The chair he is seated on was specially designed by the UH school of Engineering for Wheelchair Sports Hawaii.
